2023, 2024 & 2025 MAHINA OCEAN EXPEDITIONS
2023 expeditions will be conducted on three boats in three geographical locations: the Scottish Isles, the wild west coast of Vancouver Island and in New Zealand. Over a 10-day expedition you’ll sail approximately 300 – 450 miles, completing at least one 100-150-mile overnight passage while learning to deal with huge tides and current (except in NZ) in dramatic and remote cruising areas.
2024 expeditions will be conducted in Scotland (same as 2022 & 2023) and mid-Atlantic in the Azores which I think are one of the most fabulous island groups in the world to explore under sail.
You’ll master traditional, celestial and electronic navigation, storm tactics, Lifesling overboard rescue and gain many valuable skills and experiences. Don’t hesitate to ask about the waiting list if the expedition you’re interested in is listed as filled, as I do get cancellations, particularly when some expeditions sell out nearly one year ahead.
Price: $5,000 per berth except for Legs 2 & 3, 2023 which are $2,500.

2023 New Zealand

This is the perfect time of year to be sailing in New Zealand’s northern sub-tropical waters when the water is warm enough for daily swimming and snorkeling. You’ll fly in and out of Auckland, and I’ll provide information on joining and departure ports. Weather permitting, we hope to sail as far north as Whangaroa and as far west as Great Barrier Island. The vessel will be similar to the one I use in Scotland. These expeditions will likely sell out first

2024 Azores Islands

Starting in Horta, on Faial Island my goal will be to visit each of the nine islands providing at least one 100-150 mile ocean passage on each expedition. These islands have clear water, warm enough for snorkeling every day, great hiking trails, active volcanos, fascinating culture, cheese and wine tasting and are among my favorite in the world.
Between 2000 and 2020 I conducted many expeditions in and through the Azores and I’m very excited about sharing these gorgeous, non-touristy islands with expedition members.
Price: $5,000 per person.
